The ICRC’s Regional Delegation in Nairobi co-ordinates the institution’s humanitarian activities in Kenya, Tanzania and Djibouti. It also runs regional specialist units that provide support and expertise to the ICRC’s delegations in East Africa, the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa.
Regional Livelihoods Specialist
The Regional Delegation in Nairobi is seeking an experienced and highly motivated person to fill the above-mentioned position. The position covers the Great Lakes Region and Horn of Africa.
The Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development and dissemination of the EcoSec Policy, operational guidelines and core themes together with other specialist within the Unit and in consultation with Geneva.
- Contribute to decision making within the delegations in the regions on the EcoSec strategy through:
- Facilitating the utilisation of appropriate approaches, focusing on livelihood framework and the Household Economy Approach in assessment process within ICRC delegations in the region.
- Recommending appropriate interventions, taking into account livelihood based approaches and alternative livelihoods.
- Briefing of relevant findings to the EcoSec Coordinators and the Head of Delegation.
- Providing technical support during project identification and implementation including drawing up plans of action (including project proposals & logical frameworks for intervention).
- Providing support in monitoring and impact assessments of projects.
- Providing support in the process of defining the EcoSec strategy through the yearly exercise of Planning for Results.
- Capacity building of the EcoSec staff in the region on Livelihood Approaches and Household Economy.
- Monitoring and provision of high quality country specific information through:-
- Providing updates of the current economic situation with information from Early Warning System and other humanitarian organisations in Kenya and the region;
- Networking by participating in bimonthly and monthly meetings on the food security situation and interventions.
- Provide technical information on countries within the region on a regular basis on request by both delegations and Geneva.
- Degree or post graduate degree in economic/food security related subject;
- Computer literate;
- Excellent communication skills (English, Swahili);
- Knowledge of French is an added advantage;
- Field experience in livelihood based approaches / household economy with knowledge of pastoral, agro pastoral and rural livelihoods and /or implementation of responses in the region;
- Experience in PRA/RRA techniques, training, report writing, organising and participation in meetings;
- Kenya citizen;
- Ability to work independently and in conflict affected areas;
- High level of confidence & tolerance;
- Good organisational & communication skills
- Ability to work in a multi- cultural environment;
- Willingness to travel within Kenya and the region for up to 50% of the time;
