Power Systems Control Technician

Introduction

Job Summary:

Reporting to Chief Engineer duties and responsibilities of the jobholder include
controlling generating machines and interpretation of dispatch instructions.
 

Minimum Requirements

Educational Requirements:

“O” Level.

Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering )- from National Universities/University
Colleges or KNEC .

Related Job Experience/Qualifications:

At least 3 years experience in control of Generating plants.

Additional skills:
Ms Office proficiency
Good Leadership, supervisory, interpersonal and analytical skills.

 

Job Specification

Key Duties:

Duty/responsibility

•Control, operate and monitor 14 units in 6 stations on remote
control. Regulate load, voltage, frequency and reservoir levels
using the laid down parameters and prudent engineering
practice. Units loading and shutdown

•Continuous monitoring of performances of the generating
units and transformers parameters e.g. temperature, pressure,
flowrates and auxiliary apparatus through the SCADA for
optimal efficiency.

•Recording and analysing plants’ half hourly data. Prepare
plants daily and monthly reports, all operating instructions
received from National Control Centre (NCC) and all the work
carried out on the protection scheme and alterations e.g. over
current settings etc

•Prepare daily hydro reports for all plants and actual daily
energy projections summary and update the same to various
internal and external recipients

•In charge of stations during weekends and public holidays.
Supervision of plant operators, water treatment operators and
security personnel on duty

•Prepare notes regarding all plants and system status/
performances during a shift period.

•Perform remote switching on HV and LV for KPLC and
KenGen during normal and maintenance periods and record a
detailed account of the same

•Implement ISO QMS and EMS at the control room

•Handle emergencies and public relations as an information
centre on operation issues, security, health, safety, fire and
flooding.

Occasional duties:

The job holder may be called upon to:

•Coordinate with NCC, (KPLC) during restoration after a system blackout or system
disturbance. Start emergency diesel generator in case of emergency and ensure weekly test
runs of about minutes are done.

•In the event of NCC SCADA failure to assume system control supervision over the grid at
expected levels.

•Control access to all substations and other protected areas by being in custody of access
keys to these areas.

Responsibility:

This position has shared responsibility efficiency, safety and security of

•generating plants

•Communication equipment

•SCADA system

Judgement and Decision-Making:

Machine shutdowns in cases of abnormality, emergency, in the course of cascade management
and system security and instability to persistent faults.

External contacts: KPLC, Media, MOE, Red cross and other public institutions
frequently

Work environment:

This is an office/ control room job with exposure to job hazards due to working with
live electrical contacts and moderate physical demands due to continuous exposure to
VDUs. Disruption to leisure is common due to a highly demanding shift pattern.
